so far so good this morning out on i-70. the airport is open. we have had a lot of cancellations, mostly smaller commuter aircraft. it will stay cool through tomorrow. temperatures are 40 to 45 degrees below average, al, by the weekend, denver will be back in the 60s. al? >> all right, mike seidel, in aurora, colorado. here's a look at the storm system. it is massive. in fact the dakotas are going to be looking at heavy snow. snowfall amounts, blizzard warnings, and we got winter weather advisories stretching from utah all the way up into minnesota this morning. snowfall amounts we'll be talking about anywhere 9 to 12

inches. ahead of this system we got record breaking temperatures and that's going to be causing big problems. we have a risk of strong storms from central texas into central iowa. the strongest risk from wichita falls to tulsa. we're expecting snowfall amounts, rainfall amounts anywhere from 3 to 4 inches of rainmaking its way in. hoda? >> wow. all right, al, thanks a lot. we are following a new threat out of north korea. a warning this morning for all foreigners to leave south korea. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in seoul once again. good morning, richard. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. more rhetoric. we just returned from the dmz, the demilitarized zone along the north korean border. and the good news is we saw no signs that a military conflict is coming, but north korea is continuing its brinksmanship. if a war were coming you would see it in these cold mountains.

south korean troops today patrolled the so-called demilitarized zone. a narrow buffer between two enemies, that's also a trigger. on one side 30,000 south korean soldiers backed by nearly 30,000 american troops on the peninsula. across the valley, 70% of north korea's million man army. the two sides monitor each other so closely we were required to dress in uniform. to avoid raising suspicion. we were the first journalist allowed on this outpost. this is one of the most militarized border, and because of the latest tension south korean forces have been ordered to a heightened state of readiness. here, that means watching for suspicious activity by north korean forces. so far, nothing. south korean officials expect pyongyang will carry out a show

of force miles away from here with a missile launch. officials tell nbc news the missile is expected to land in the sea, most likely between japan and guam and could happen very soon. north korean television today caution foreign tourists in the south to prepare for evacuation, apparently more bluster. south korean troops say they are ready either way. analysts here expect after the missile launch north korea, of course, will declare victory but then will probably pull back from the brink and see if it accomplished anything from all of this. matt? >> richard engel in seoul again for us this morning. richard, thank you as always. on a much lighter note fans of the louisville cardinals are riding high this morning, as college basketball's new national champs. willie geist got the

rallied from a 12-point deficit. on their way to an 82-76 victory. >> the lob to siva! >> reporter: head coach rick pitino revealed one additional way he'd be celebrating. >> they said if we win the national championship, will you get a tattoo. he said, yes. >> reporter: the message was rise to the occasion. this morning they are rising as national champions. and rick pitino becomes the first coach to win two national championships. on monday morning before the game, pitino was voted into the basketball hall of fame. not a bad day. >> does he have a piece of horse running in the kentucky derry? >> he's having heck of a week. meanwhile, they should warn people when they set those fireworks off. he really flinched. >> that was supposed to be the great crowning moment, instead he was ducking.

>> we had a little prediction moment here yesterday off the air, hoda and i were thinking about who would win. i said it's louisville 69-62. hoda predicted 78-72, but chose the syracuse orangemen. >> stopping saying that. >> you were closer, congratulations. >> what do i win? >> my respect and admiration. natalie, some serious news to get to. sadly, we begin with a horrific shooting in serbia where a 60-year-old man went door-to-door this morning gunning 13 people down in a quiet village near belgrade. officials there say the man then tried to kill himself and his wife but they both survived. they are gravely wounded. hospital officials say that the man had no history of mental illness and his motive is still unclear. here at home wildfires are raging out west threatening about 100 homes in ventura county, california. an overnight evacuation order has been lifted this morning.

but the wind-whipped blaze is still not contained, sprawling across some 170 acres. at least two homes were destroyed, but no injuries have been reported. the navy is hailing its latest weapon as the future of warfare. for the first time ever, the navy will deploy a laser on its ships capable of shooting down drones and disabling hostile ships at sea. the laser cost about $1 per shot that's compared to hundreds of thousands of dollars it costs to set off a missile. now, to wall street. a major shakeup at jcpenney. good morning, apple chief executive ron johnson resigning from the company as ceo. after failing to revive the company's brand. the company worth half of what it was when he took over. johnson's predecessor will take the reins as spring shopping season gets under way.

former prime minister margaret thatcher. the queen authorizing a ceremonial funeral. >> reporter: good morning, matt. it has just been announced that her funeral will be held next wednesday. the queen and prince phillip will attend. thatcher is considered to be one of the greatest world leaders of the 20th century, but it will not be a state funeral. because she remains controversial. a friend quoted said she didn't want one, knew it would be a waste of money. margaret thatcher, the iron lady, not one to always follow the rules. even when her advisers disagreed according to the rules of history here, a state funeral is for monarchs, although winston churchill was honored with one. princess diana and queen mum

were not. that doesn't mean there won't be an outpouring on a grand scale. >> it is going to be a massive ceremonial funeral and she was a great friend of america, a great friend of freedom. >> reporter: and according to her own wishes she will not lie in state. there's a service at westminster before the day of the funeral. she will be cremated. how controversial is thatcher still today? news of her passing brought out the highest praise. >> margaret thatcher was a revolutionary and she was a liberator. >> reporter: in glasgow jubilant dancing in the streets. in some areas blighted by closing of mines that her policies seem to have caused, people didn't hold back. some front pages today had no words, this one "loved, hated,

never forgotten." shortly after her funeral her authorized biography will be published, which she planned to come out after her death. she was unafraid to be unpopular to get things done and whose husband once when asked who wears the pants in your family and she said i do and i wash and iron them too. >> tony blair served as prime minister of great britain from 1997 to 2007. he joins us this morning exclusively. prime minister blair, it's always good to see you. thanks for your time. you said once of margaret thatcher very few leaders get to change not only the political landscape of their country but the world. what's the most important way in which she changed the world? >> i think the policies she introduced in respect to the balance between the state and the market, selling off the state industries, putting trade unions within a proper legal framework, some of the measures

to do with taxation and spending, there was a philosophy that even people, and i come from the opposite side of the political fence, even people on the opposite side of the political fence took some of those lessons and applied them not just in the uk but around the world. she was a very controversial figure. you got to say she was a towering fight and her impact was a global one. >> i know she visited you on several occasions while you were prime minister. according to the "new york times" yesterday, she may have preferred you over john major. did you seek her counsel on key issues? >> yes, i did. when she would come in and see me she was always -- it was one of the paradoxes about margaret thatcher that she had this iron lady image.

but she was very kind and very warm and interesting when i came into downing street in 1997 the staff in downing street, the people who do the chores and keep the place running, they were always very, very generous about her and regarded her highly. >> while i have you here i need to ask you a question about some current events. it was back in 2003, prime minister blair, you said after iraq we need to deal with north korea and their weapons program. three years later you condemned that regime for their nuclear test. you've seen what's happened lately. the tension level continues to rise. it seems on a daily basis, north korea either threatens the u.s. or south korea. is this something more, in your opinion, than a new leader saying to the world hey look at me? >> it's a good question. i'm not sure we know the answer to it, frankly. and this is the problem when you've got a regime that doesn't really conform to any recognized rules with nuclear weapons capability. so it's a very tough situation. now, i think, and i hope that ultimately this is saber

rattling, it's an attempt to deal with some of the regime's internal problems by having external focus. it's asserting its muscularity, if you like, but this is an unusual and going to be a dangerous situation as a result of the nature of the regime and the capabilities they have. so, i know behind the scenes it's hard to talk about all these things publicly, there will be the most enormous efforts going into making sure that regime gets a clear and strong message but this is a situation where if you like what the korean peninsula, you got south korea, north korea, same people, divided. it's almost like a laboratory experiment, in good government south korea having come from nothing to being one of the leading industrial countries and

student tested positive. the first case in contra costa county in four years. they will be on campus offering testing to anybody who may have shared a classroom or been in a club with the infected student. the man accused of driving his car through a walmart store is expected to be back in court for a similar but separate incident at a car wash. he crashed through the front window of a convenience store attached to that car wash back in december. he will be in court today in that case as well as for sentencing on a marijuana charge stemming from 2011. also in court today, the former head of san mateo county's probation department, stuart forrest, stands accused of possessing child pornography. he resigned amid this investigation. let's take a look outside. it is going to be beautiful. >> it is going to be really nice. we still have breezy conditions. winds have relaxed

hearing do you in florida tied to casey anthony's bankruptcy case. nbc's kerry sanders has details on that. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. this bankruptcy hearing will begin in a few hours but this bankruptcy case is different than most because it asks the questions who owns casey anthony's life story, and if her story is a valuable asset can somebody else own it? she's a free woman but casey anthony is still battling in court, filing for bankruptcy. >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty. >> reporter: she was acquit of murderinger 2-year-old daughter two years ago. in court documents she claims she owes almost collars 800,000 mostly in attorneys fees. but now the trustee wants to repay the debt by auctioning off the rights to her story. anthony's lawyers are fighting back.

she would have to speak, write or otherwise express her memories so they could be recorded in a firm enjoyable by others. for that reason alone the trustees motion should be denied. anthony's hearing last month was recorded by the court. >> have you had any discussions with any agents in relationship to any movie or book the rights your story? >> no, sir. >> have you hired an agent to handle any media rights at this time? >> no, sir. >> reporter: already texas lawyer has offered to buy casey anthony's story for $10,000. his goal to prevent her from profiting. he calls her story an asset and in a statement says as much as i would like to think otherwise casey anthony's story has value. legal experts expect anthony's lawyers to fight any plan to sell her story. >> the biggest potential source of income is a book deal and movie deal some day and that's why it's important from her standpoint to keep that asset away from the creditors she owes

all of a sudden it was like she's coming and casey had to step in to make sure nurses were on their toes. she came and ten minutes late ear doctor walked in and said what happened? >> casey, were you nervous when the doctor was not present? >> yes. i was so nervous. i was watching them and thinking i don't know if he had know this is going to happen as fast as it does but i wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. but i haven't seen any other births but my wife's so i knew what was happening. i think they are just so used to it taking a longer time and as soon as she was hurting i told them carey, she's not your average bear. if she's hurting it's go time. they started to get more heat on it and they were moving and the nurses brought the baby into the world. >> they were amazing. >> we're so happy four. joey and sundance your two boys

showing him physically and verbally abusing his players. we know the athletic director also resigned because of the way he handled the situation. knowing about it for five months and not firing the coach only suspending him. here's the part that's getting a lot of attention. mike rice the basketball coach walks way with more than a million dollars and a bonus for finishing the last season, the athletic director who resigned over his handling of the situation walks away with a $1.2 million and two years worth of health insurance. how do we feel about that? >> when a ceo does horrible at a company and stock goes down 90% if they fire him he still legally gets his severance. i don't think the two are related. it sounds ridiculous. if somebody gets fired unless they are doing something illegal they get what's in their contract. does it feel wrong? yes. is there anything wrong with it? no. >> and it sounds more like a buy

out for a settlement so there's no future litigation, because if the athletic director was instructed by fortunate and/or the board and/or legal advisers to do a particular action and he did that action firing him without a settlement agreement would hit them back. it leaves a bad taste in people's mouth especially when this is a public university and egregious behavior. from a legal standpoint there's no recourse to follow through but it does leave a bad taste. >> let's move on. president obama on a fundraising trip to california a few days ago introduced the state's attorney general at an event and after singing her praises in terms of her brilliance and dedication he said the following quote, she also happens to be by far the best looking attorney general in the country, end quote. the reaction was pretty swift. was at any time wrong thing to say? >> yes. >> it was a biden moment.

next topic, sexless marriage. sexless marriage apparently is defined as couples who only have sex ten times a year or less. some women apparently say it's okay to live in a sexless marriage. dr. janet do you think they are telling the truth, i'm fine? >> i think they are not telling the truth. because if you're in a marriage in a relationship physical intimacy is important. it doesn't necessarily have to be sexual intercourse but you need someone to rub me on the back and say how are you doing to have that ability to care four. women say they rather sleep than have sex. >> but it doesn't mean there's no love? >> intimacy is a different thing than sex. sometimes sex can be a barometer and if it isn't happening maybe it isn't because you don't love your spouse or who you live but because of other stresses in your life and i think people do tell the truth. they say i can go without.

>> i say it's a team building activity. as a mother of five and as a mother of one young child no matter what i don't like when people complain to me it's tough. i only have two i can't complain i'm tired. we're all tired. >> you're a single mom it takes on a different meaning. >> agree. you talk about sometimes what we can live with as opposed to what we want and what we need. i think a lot of women can live like that. for me it was making a choice about am i happy? whom am i with. are they making me hope. that's looking deep down and knowing what makes you happy. your happiness is your kids happiness and your sadness is your kids sadness. >> and whether or not women are happy what are some things they should do to improve? >> focus on the relationship and understand it's not the quantity of sex but the quality of the

relationship. at all times try to minimize conflict, find something nice to say to your partner and ask for what you need. don't be afraid to ask for what you need. >> sometimes it takes a first step and not both being stubborn. maybe you had an argument or stressful day. we can be childish as couples and you need to extend the olive branch. what i always say is, as tired as you are, if you can reach out and you have a loving night and i think it's called making love you're creating' reminding each other about the love you have. it's not called that for no reason. it does seem to follow good feelings follow and a good cycle and a good pattern follows. we get into a rut but we sometimes have to help each other get out of it. >> hang on because we'll continue our discussion. stick around much more from our ladies coming up after these messages.

let's talk about mean girls existing after high school. new research explains mean girls doesn't dissolve when you graduate from high school it goes on into college. it continues even now as we're adults. have you all experience this and janet you both have four daughters each. so i imagine your girls have experience this somewhat. >> one of my daughters who entered the workplace and told me one. bosses who targeted her on the weekend. she never did a good job. that protective side of me imagine when she was 6 jumped out. i wanted to confront the person, i couldn't. you have to support your child or daughter and teach them when they are adults they can choose what to listen to and figure out a way to make it work. that feeling of despair never goes away. >> do i have four daughters and even the little one she said something to me that was so telling the other day. she said fancy girls are mean.

>> we've got so much technology. we're expected to do more in less time. what we have to realize is that sometimes the stuff we think really matters, trying to keep up with what everybody else is doing, doesn't matter. >> keeping your tank full. you end up giving to everybody, you don't work out, you don't do anything, you don't fill up -- >> you have to take care of yourself. when you take care of yourself. you're able to give to other people and you're able to give from your heart not just from your head and you are really very present there. the spiritual life is for everyone very different and i think what we need to do is pay attention to what works for us, when do we quiet ourselves, how do we look at the larger picture. and we change and other people change. so what we were able to do when we were younger may not be what we're able to do when we're older and other people who expect things from us may not realize that. we have to know what we can did and do it well. >> one of the weirdest things in my life, was when i realized if i got up one hour earlier and took that time to be quiet and to be spiritual in my own way, and i'm not trying to force my

it is 10:26. i'm marla tellez. the blue angels will not be flying over bay area skies. you can thank sequestration. the bay area group is canceling the rest of its 2013 season. this includes san francisco's popular fleet week health in early october. the pentagon has to catch $4 billion from the budget because of sequestration that took effect in march. when the blue angels are a sentimental favorite, they are not considered a necessity. after the break, we'll check the forecast and also have a look at the traffic coming up.

squadron of blue f-18s perform those daring maneuvers over the bay. the u.s. navy made the announcement within the past couple of hours it has canceled the rest of the blue angels 2013 season due to the automatic budget cuts forced upon them by this year's sequestration, unless a local air show organizers want to pay for them to show up. that means roughly 30 performances have been canceled including san francisco's fleet week appearance during the week of october 10th through 14th. the organizer of that event tells us that the rest of that week will go on here as planned even without the blues. given the fact the angels are the main attraction, part of the reason fleet week draws a million visitors, it's hard to tell what kind of impact or absence it will have economically. >> well, i think schools closing, as an ex-school teacher it's wise. >> got to cut
